ALHem Portfolio

Safer Chemicals Alternative (ALHem) is a civil society organisation based in Belgrade, Serbia, dedicated to promoting sustainable development with a particular focus on the sound management of chemicals.

The organisation was established in 2013 by experts with extensive professional experience in chemicals management.

ALHem’s mission is to help reduce the risks posed by hazardous chemicals and products containing them, as well as their adverse impacts on human health and the environment in Serbia.

SCIENCE-BASED APPROACH AND INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS
ALHem’s work is grounded in scientifically validated evidence on the harmful effects of chemicals and the availability of safer alternatives. The organisation promotes and applies the principles of the Global Framework on Chemicals, contributing to the protection of human health and the environment through the sound management of chemicals.

ALHem’s activities contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda, particularly SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being (Target 3.9: substantially reduce illnesses and deaths caused by hazardous chemicals and pollution) and SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production (Target 12.4: achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste throughout their life cycle).

How we create change?

ALHem advances the protection of human health and the environment by influencing public policy, empowering citizens, supporting businesses in transitioning to safer alternatives, and contributing to Serbia’s alignment with European environmental and health standards.

ALHem contributes to building a society where products are safe, information is accessible, and development is sustainable through policy advocacy, research, education, and cooperation with public authorities, businesses, and citizens.
